Samsung’s Memo app is also worth mentioning, as it’s fairly robust, though not as feature rich as the S Memo app I tested on the Galaxy Note 10.1.

The good include a relatively robust photo editor, decent video editor, full copy of Polaris Office for modest Microsoft document work, and the Dropbox cloud app, complete with 50GB of free storage for one year ($99 otherwise). There are a handful of other preloaded apps, some good, some crap, which are easy to ignore, but can’t be uninstalled. I don’t think the inclusion of an IR blaster on the Tab 2 10.1, or any tablet, makes the traditional remote obsolete, but it’s a nice addition that takes nothing away from the overall experience. Peel is the better of the two thanks to its superior interface and comes pre-loaded on the tablet, but both are fully functional and easy to use and set up. There are two apps worth checking out on this front, Peel and Dijit. Like most other recent Samsung Galaxy Tabs, the Tab 2 10.1 has an IR blaster that enables the tablet to function as a universal remote.

I can also see Google stealing a similar feature in future versions of Android just as it did with resizable widgets, which first appeared in TouchWiz. On the Tab 2 10.1, they are limited, but I can see the use in having a mini web browser or video player open and running next to a memo app for transcribing. They can be easily accessed from the ever-present Android taskbar and function similar to apps in Windows. Most notable are the mini apps that include an alarm, calculator, email widget, music player, calendar widget (called S Planner), task manager, and world clock. There are critics and users that wish Samsung and others would leave Android well enough alone, but TouchWiz brings a few decent features to the operating system. TouchWiz is a heavier interface than the tweaks Toshiba, Acer, and others apply, and I can’t help but think it contributes to some of the Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 lag. Samsung also took the liberty of applying its TouchWiz user interface overlay on top of ICS, and it presents what ultimately amounts to a mixed bag. It’s an improvement over the previous Android OS, Honeycomb, in every way, and seems like the tablet operating system Google engineers would have developed instead of Honeycomb had they not been under the gun to compete with Apple and the iPad. The Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 ships with Android Ice Cream Sandwich, which we praised when it first came out late last year. Sunspider is a Javascript benchmark for measuring browser performance.

Quadrant measures CPU, 3D, and memory performance. Looking at the benchmarks, it does well compared to other Android tablets in the Quadrant performance benchmark, and right in the middle in the Sunspider web benchmark. Our Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 took between 40 and 43 seconds to reach the unlock screen from a cold start, which is about average for the tablets we’ve tested, both dual- and quad-core.
